Project 3- Animation of the Completed 3D Scene

The final project involves production of a short animation of the completed 3D scene from previous project, using 3Ds Max's animation commands and tools. The video clips or images produced from 3Ds Max is then editted in Windows Movie Maker.

Work in Progress:

Generate scenes from 3Ds Max
1. Draw smooth lines for the camera path in the scene from top view.

2. Create a camera to be following the path.

 3. Attach camera to path.
Select Camera > Motion > Assign Controller > Position > Path Constraint

4. Sometimes, the other objects are hidden or deleted to easily handle the camera.

Generate human figure into the scene.
1. Populate > Seated Character > Drag to the desired position

2. The character gender and height can be chosen.
For a human group, amount of human generated can be adjusted.

3. The "seat" is then deleted from the scene.

Sun animation
1. Daylight is created with setting as mr Sun and mr Sky.

2. Using Set Key, a sun animation is created by setting different sun position in alternate frames.

Pivot door is created. Using set key and rotate to generate door opening scene.

Render Setup
1. Set time output to Active Time Segment to render every frames or set to Range to select the desired parts. For time saving, every nth frame tool can be used but it may affect the smoothness of the animation.

2. File can be saved in avi format or jpeg format based on preferences.

Video edit in Windows Movie Maker
1. Scenes are brought into movie maker to be editted.

2. For frames saved in jpeg files, the images are brought into movie maker to be joined before combining with other scenes.

3. Background music is added.

4. Text captions are added.

Project 2B- Interior Renderings

Project 2: Still Rendering with Materials, Lights, Camera Views with Site Context

The second project continues with interior renderings. Using the same house, I have applied materials, lights and camera views into 2 selected spaces, dining room and working area. The final product is done using 3Ds max application and Photoshop. The procedures are more or less similar to Project 2A-Exterior Renderings.

Work in Progress:

Set up camera views
1. 2 eye view camera are set up in the dining room and working area.

Wall and floor
1. Apply materials on the wall and floor.

2. Test render to see the effect of lights before putting in furniture.

Import furniture
1. Furniture is downloaded online to be imported into the 3D scene.

2. Extracted zip file downloaded are to be imported.

3. Import and merge 3D object without materials.

4. Applying materials on object to make it visual realistic.

5. The components are group and drag into the scene.

6. Move and rotate to the desired position.

Lighting
1. Lamps are enhanced by adding target light.

2. Realistic view of one of the light applied on imported wall lamp.

3. Types, shapes, sizes and intensity of light are done based on the object suitability,
Target light is used on lamps, Omni light is used to enhanced the brightness in the room.

4. Using light lister to adjust the properties of all the lights

5. Colour of lights are altered to create warmth or cool effect in the space.

Rendering
1. Render preview before the final renders to check on brightness and effects on the 3D scenes.

2. Photographic exposure setting is managed for better outcome.

Test renderings

Post Production
1. Rendered files are to be imported into Photoshop to be further enhanced.

2. Lighting and contrast are adjusted.

3. Site context is enhanced by adding sky background.

4. To enhanced the scale and proportion, human figure is downloaded online, imported to Photoshop and edited to be added into the scenes.

5. Drag the human into the scene and adjust the size.

 6. Capacity is lowered down to keep visual focus on the 3D spaces created.

Project 2- Still Rendering with Materials, Lights, Camera Views with Site Context

In project 2, our task is to produce photorealistic still rendering of the design from project 1 with materials, appropriate camera views and post production enhancement on the visual outcome. I have achieved my final rendering product using 3Ds max application and Photoshop as the post production tool.

Work in progress:

Contour of a hill
1. First, I created the contour by creating a plane in 3Ds max to be modified.

2. The design is moved to the plane as reference.

3. Using edit poly and move surface to create different heights.

4. Push/pull button is used to freely create the desired hill contour.

Applying materials
1. The contour is hided. Using Arch and Design material, bitmap of a file of an image downloaded online is applied on the wall, showing the wooden texture. Bump is applied to enhance the visual outcome.

2. UVW map is used to adjust the length, width and tiles of the material to make it more realistic.

3. For some of the objects using the same material, they are grouped together.

4. Doors and windows are imported and merged into the scene to be fitted into the frames.
Some imported objects need to be edited for the scale, directions and positions.
Move while snap is on to make sure the object is correctly fitted.

Group the small components of a casing window.
Scale to the correct frame size.
 Rotate to the correct direction.
 Ungroup and apply materials.
5. Different materials are applied.

6. Unhide contour to apply materials.

7. Apply bitmap ad bump to the ground to create forest scene.

8. Freeze the house and contour to add in plants.

9. Grass and trees are imported. Materials are applied on the plants.

10. Unfreeze all.

Light and camera
11. Daylight is added.

12. Camera is added. View is then set to eye level view height at 1500mm.

13. Mr Sky portal is added.

14. Setup render and preview camera view 1.

15. Rendering in progress.

16. Rendering camera view 2.
Environment background using blue colour
Environment map using mr Physical Sky

Post production
Photoshop
1. The renderings are modified in Photoshop for better visual outcome.

Test renderings

2. Background is removed to be added with a sky background image.

3. Human figure is added to enhance the scale.

 4. Shadow of imported objects are added to make it realistic.

5. File is saved in 1000 pixels jpeg.
